From Sketch to Weekend Build

Use a repeatable workflow from rough idea through cut list, dry fit, assembly and revision notes.

Define the use

Start with the problem the project must solve, the available space and the objects it must hold. A few hard constraints prevent endless design changes.

Prototype dimensions

Use cardboard, scrap wood or tape on the floor or wall to check height, depth and reach before cutting expensive material.

Create the cut list

Translate the sketch into named parts with quantities and finished dimensions. Confirm how each joint changes the length of adjoining parts.

Dry-fit before glue

Assemble temporarily, check square, confirm hardware clearances and correct small errors while parts can still be adjusted.

Keep revision notes

Record what changed during the build. Those notes turn a one-off project into a repeatable plan and make the next version faster and more accurate.
