How to Build an Accurate Cut List

Turn a sketch into a parts list that accounts for quantity, grain, kerf and assembly order.

Name every part

Give each piece a function such as left side, shelf, rail or back. This makes mistakes easier to spot than a list containing only dimensions.

Record finished dimensions

Track quantity, finished length, width and thickness. Add grain direction or visible face when that matters.

Separate rough and final sizes

If you mill solid lumber, record rough cutting dimensions separately from finished dimensions. If you use plywood, account for the actual measured panel thickness.

Group repeat parts

Identical pieces should be cut as a batch or from a common setup whenever practical. This improves consistency and reduces repeated measuring.

Optimize only after design

First make sure the parts are correct; then optimize the layout. A perfect sheet layout of the wrong dimensions still produces a failed project.
