Outdoor Wood: Moisture and Durability

Design outdoor projects so water can drain, wood can move and hardware can survive exposure.

Expect movement

Wood changes dimension with moisture, especially across the grain. Wide panels and trapped joints need room to move.

Design for drainage

Avoid horizontal pockets that hold water. Use gaps, slopes, spacers and raised feet to keep vulnerable areas from remaining wet.

Protect end grain

End grain absorbs moisture readily. Keep it off wet surfaces and use suitable coatings or construction details where appropriate.

Choose compatible fasteners

Weather and treated lumber can accelerate corrosion. Select fasteners and connectors that are compatible with both the wood and the environment.

Maintain the project

Outdoor furniture is not install-and-forget. Inspect joints, finish, fasteners and ground contact periodically and repair problems before they become structural.
