Pocket Holes vs Dowels vs Biscuits

Pick a joining method based on alignment, appearance, load direction and your workflow.

Pocket holes

Pocket screws are fast and convenient for many concealed joints, face frames and utility projects. They rely on correct jig setup, suitable screw choice and enough stock thickness around the screw path.

Dowels

Dowels can create clean hidden joints and help alignment when holes are accurately located. Repeatability improves with a good jig and consistent reference faces.

Biscuits

Biscuits are often useful for alignment in panel or edge assemblies. They are not a universal replacement for structural joinery; the joint design and adhesive surface still matter.

Choose by failure mode

Ask how the joint will be loaded: tension, shear, racking or repeated movement. A joint that is perfectly adequate for a shelf divider may be inappropriate for a chair.

Prototype critical joints

Use offcuts of the actual material and make a test joint. This confirms settings, screw length, glue behavior and fit before you risk the finished parts.
