Table Saw Safety: A Beginner Checklist

Use a repeatable pre-cut routine and the safety systems specified for your saw.

Before the switch

Read the manufacturer manual for your exact saw. Confirm the blade is suitable, tight and undamaged; the throat plate is seated; the fence is aligned; and the work area has safe infeed and outfeed space.

Use guarding systems

Use the riving knife, splitter, blade guard and anti-kickback devices as specified for the operation. Do not remove safety equipment simply because a cut feels easier without it.

Control the workpiece

Keep stock flat against the table and reference surface. Use push sticks, push blocks, featherboards or jigs where appropriate. Never put your hands in the blade path or reach over a moving blade.

Plan for kickback

Stand out of the likely kickback path and never freehand a rip cut. Do not trap an offcut between the blade and fence. Stop if stock is warped, unstable or too small to control safely.

After the cut

Wait for the blade to stop before reaching near it. Disconnect power before blade changes, cleaning near the blade, or adjustments that could put your hands in danger.
